2007 Draft

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by mrsouth on Friday 29 December 2006 at 6:49 pm

Anyone watch the Houston Cougars in the Liberty Bowl?  Quarterback Kevin Kolb (#4) looks like the real deal.  He is projected to be the 5th or 6th QB taken in 2007.
How is this for a bold move – trade up our first round pick along with Aaron Rogers to Detroit.  Take Calvin Johnson in the first round and Kevin Kolb in Round 2.

This, of course, is assuming Brett will play for at least one more, hopefully two more years.

It eliminates any potential quarterback controversy, and  Kevin Kolb gets to learn from one of the best ever just before Brett is ready to hang it up.

Rogers shouldn’t have to hang around for another year or two behind Brett.  We would definitely have to address a few weak areas via free agency and the later rounds of the draft, but this would give us a great future, and a decent chance next year to make some noise.
Go Kevin Kolb, go Calvin Johnson, go Brett Favre, and go Pack, go!

Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 29 December 2006 at 4:51 pm

The Green Bay Packers have won 3 games in a row and still have a chance to make the playoffs if things break their way over the weekend.  The Bears have homefield advantage all wrapped up and will try to get through this game injury free.

The Packers will likely come out running the ball with Ahman Green (988 yards rushing) against a Bears defense that is allowing 99.5 yards rushing and 4.1 yards per carry so far this season.  If the Packers are successful running the ball it will make things much easier for Brett Favre when he drops back to throw the ball.  Favre has been in a little slump lately, but Donald Driver (89 rec, 1,272 yards receiving) still has gotten his yards.

The Bears will likely only use their starters in the first half.  Thomas Jones (1,183 yards rushing) and Cedric Benson (538 yards rushing) should both have decent games while they are in the game as the Packers have allowed 112.7 yards rushing per game and 4.1 yards per carry.  Adrian Peterson will probably get the bulk of the second half carries and he’s a decent running back.  Rex Grossman should have a decent half of football in him as long as the Bears keep DE Aaron Kampman (15.5 sacks) away from him.  Brian Griese will probably play the second half as the Bears try to work the rust of him in case he’s needed in the playoffs.

The Bears have better players, but they might not really be in this game mentally….so don’t be surprised if the Packers win this football game.

Packers playoff scenarios

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Thursday 28 December 2006 at 8:11 pm

The Green Bay Packers can clinch a playoff berth with:  1) a win, a NY Giants win and clinching strength of victory tiebreaker over the NY Giants  2) a win and NY Giants and St. Louis both lose or tie   3) a win, a NY Giants loss or tie and a Carolina win  4) a win, a New York Giants loss or tie and an Atlanta win  5) a tie, NY Giants and St. Louis both lose and Atlanta and Carolina both lose or tie.

Coach McCarthy and Brett Favre have done an amazing job together to just even have a chance at the playoffs with this team as they were lousy last season.

Packers’ defense leads way to 9-7 victory over the Vikings

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Saturday 23 December 2006 at 2:26 am

The Packers played a great defensive game and that’s certainly why they won this football game.  DE Aaron Kampman was virtually unstoppable against the Vikings.  He rolled up 7 tackles and sacked rookie QB Tavaris Jackson 3 times.  The Packers held the Vikings to 77 yards rushing on 22 carries (3.5 ypc).  The Vikings completed 10 of 20 passes for 27 net yards passing!!!!!!!!

Brett Favre didn’t have his best game, but he made some big plays when they were needed to help the Packers win this game.  Favre completed 26 of 50 passes for 285 yards and 2 INTs.  Ahman Green had a rough night with 18 carries for 42 yards (2.3 ypc) and he caught 4 passes for 27 yards.  Donald Driver had another good night with 9 catches for 99 yards.  Ruvell Martin pitched in with a solid 3 receptions for 69 yards.  Bubba Franks even caught 5 passes for 43 yards.

The Packers improved to 7-8 on this season and have kept their slim playoff hopes alive.

Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Wednesday 20 December 2006 at 3:18 pm
Both the Packers and Vikings come into this game with 6-8 records.  The Vikings lost last week to the Jets in the MetroDome 26-13.  The Packers have won 2 games in a row.  The winner of this game could possibly still make the playoffs, and that should tell you how bad the NFC is.

The Vikings have finally have decided to take a peek into the future as they will start rookie QB Tavaris Jackson against the Packers on Thursday night.  The Vikings will likely run the ball first with Chester Taylor (1,136 yards rushing) against a Packers defense that is allowing 115.2 yards rushing per game and 4.1 yards per carry.  After they establish the run, look for Jackson to take some shots downfield to Troy Williamson and Travis Taylor.  The Vikings must keep the Packers’ DEs (Aaron Kampman and Cullen Jenkins) out of their backfield as they sacked Jon Kitna five times last week.  When young QBs are under a big rush they tend to make mistakes, so keep a close eye on how the Vikings handle the DEs of the Packers.

The Packers will probably come out throwing the ball against the Vikings.  The Vikings have given up an average of 235.5 yards passing per game this season, but they have 19 interceptions so Brett Favre will have to be careful.  Favre will be looking to get the ball to his favorite receiver, Donald Driver, who has caught 80 passes this season for 1,173 yards.  Rookie WR Greg Jennings could have a big game on the other side of the field if the Vikings decide to double Driver alot.  The Packers will still test the great Vikings run defense that is allowing a remarkable 55.1 yards rushing per game and 2.7 yards per carry.  Ahman Green (946 yards rushing) is only 159 yards away from being the Packers’ all-time leading rusher and he’s said it’s important to him…so he will be motivated to have a big game.  That will be remarkable to watch.

I think the Packers will force Tavaris Jackson into a couple mistakes that will cost the Vikings the game.  The bright lights, Lambeau Field, and trying to match Brett Favre will be too much for the rook to handle as the Packers will sweep the Vikings for the season.

Packer Playoff Scenario

GB is in with 2 wins against Minn and Chicago and:

Atlanta loses one of 2 remaining, St. Louis loses one of 2 remaining, and finally the NY Giants must lose to New Orleans at home Dec. 24th and lose at Washington the final week of season.

Seems like a tall order — but doable.  Go Pack.

Packers defense awesome in 17-9 win over the Lions

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 17 December 2006 at 11:22 pm

Brett Favre reached a milestone as he passed Dan Marino and now has the most completions ever by an NFL QB.  That’s about all Brett Favre did right today.  He completed 20 of 37 passes for 174 yards and 3 pick-offs!  The Packers did run the ball real well though.  Ahman Green was real busy with 22 carries for 79 yards (3.6 ypc) and he caught 7 passes for 44 yards.  Vernand Morency had his best game as a Packer with 7 carries for 54 yards (7.7 ypc) and 2 TDs!  Donald Driver led the receiving corps with 7 catches for 70 yards.

The defense was outstanding for the Packers today.  Nick Barnett led the way for the defense with 12 tackles.  DE Cullen Jenkins got his first start of the season and had 5 tackles and 3 sacks.  Aaron Kampman continued his fine play with 7 tackles and 2 sacks.  The Packers held the Lions to 59 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.0 ypc).  The Lions only completed 16 of 26 passes for 84 net yards passing, plus the Packers picked off Kitna twice.

The Packers improved to 6-8 on the season with this win.

Aaron Kampman closing in on Pro Bowl

Aaron Kampman has been fantastic all season long for the Green Bay Packers and deserves a trip to Hawaii.  He has 69 tackles, 10.5 sacks and has forced 3 fumbles so far this season.  He’s been virtually impossible to block with one man so he’s really helped out the outside linebackers by keeping them clean.

Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 15 December 2006 at 4:44 pm
The Detroit Lions are 2-11 this season and have lost their last five games in a row.  The Packers won last week in San Francisco and sit at 5-8 on the season.

The Lions will undoubtedly throw the ball all day long against the Packers.  With Kevin Jones out for the season, the Lions will have to start Arlen Harris and he scares no one including the Packers who allow 119.6 yards rushing and 4.1 yards per carry so far this season.  Look for Kitna (3,484 yards passing) to be looking downfield to Roy Williams (69 rec, 1,116 yards) and Mike Furrey (74 rec, 857 yards.  The problem with the passing game is that the Lions have allowed 49 sacks this season, and the Packers have good pass-rushing ends in Aaron Kampman (10.5 sacks) and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (5 sacks).  When Kitna gets hit a few times he gets nervous and throws the ball when he shouldn’t as he’s thrown 19 interceptions this season.

The Packers will run the ball to start the game with Ahman Green (867 yards rushing) to soften up the defense and then it will be bombs away.  Brett Favre should have little problem picking a secondary apart that is allowing 216.2 net yards passing and allows QBs to have a 97.6 rating against them.  Donald Driver (73 rec, 1,103 yards) and Greg Jennings (if healthy enough to play) should have no problem rolling up big numbers.  Part of the secondary’s problem for the Lions is that they have virtually no pass rush as they only have 23 sacks this season.  That coupled with the excellent protection that Brett Favre has enjoyed (only sacked 20 times this year) could leave the Lions in a world of hurt on Sunday!

The first game between these teams was won 31-24 by the Packers in Detroit.  Kevin Jones played good in that game and he won’t be there on Sunday.  Also, this game is in Lambeau Field and the Lions are 0-6 on the road this season.  I look for the Packers to win this game by a fairly big number.

Packers continue dominance of Niners 30-19

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 11 December 2006 at 8:30 am

The Packers just pushed around the Niners all day long.  Brett Favre completed 22 of 34 passes for 293 yards and 2 TDs.  Ahman Green carried the ball 21 times for 77 yards (3.7 ypc) and had a TD.  Vernand Morency had a good game as he carried the ball 7 times for 69 yards (9.9 ypc).  Donald Driver had an outstanding game with 9 grabs for 160 yards and a TD.  Greg Jennings (5 rec, 50 yards) and Ruvell Martin (2 rec, 42 yards, TD).

Nick Collins (6 tackles, INT) and AJ Hawk (5 tackles, INT) each played well on the Packers defense.  The Packers allowed the 49ers to carry the ball 25 times and amass 146 yards rushing (5.8 ypc).  The Niners completed only 12 of 29 passes for 194 net yards passing.

The Packers improved to 5-8 on the season with this win.
