Brett Favre is zeroing in on NFL History for the Green Bay Packers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by dawgpounded on Sunday 24 June 2007 at 11:59 am

Dan Marino’s records are about to fall as Brett Favre only needs to stay healthy and have a decent season to own the top spot among all NFL QBs in passing yards and TD passes. Favre is 3,861 yards passing behind Marino and only 6 TDs. He should get the TDs rather easily but the yards will require some help from his friends. Favre has still got the arm and mobility to play at a high level for the Packers, but he also still has the bad habit of not throwing the ball away and forcing it and the result is often an interception. Favre started all 16 games last season for the Packers and he completed 343 of 613 passes (56%) for 3,885 yards with 18 TD passes and 18 interceptions (72.7 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 23 times for 29 yards (1.3 ypc) with 1 TD run. The Packers must develop a running game to take away some of the pressure on Favre and that might be hard to do with their unproven corps of running backs. Favre has played in 241 games (237 starts) in his NFL career and he’s completed 5,021 (NFL record) of 8,223 passes (61.1%) for 57,500 yards with 414 TD passes and 273 interceptions (85.1 QB Rating). He also has run the football 526 times for 1,774 yards (3.4 ypc) with 13 TD runs. The Packers season will mirror how well Favre plays this season.

Aaron Rodgers will be the #2 QB for the Packers. He was drafted to be the eventual replacement for Brett Favre, but it seems as if the Packers aren’t so sure about him. He played in 2 games (9 starts) last season for the Packers and he completed 6 of 15 (40%) passes for 46 yards (48.2 QB Rating). He also carried the football 2 times for 11 yards (5.5 ypc). Rodgers really hasn’t had much playing time in his career and that’s to be expected behind Brett Favre so all they can do is cross their fingers and hope that he’s ready if and when they need him to play. Rodgers has played in 5 NFL games (0 starts) and he’s completed 15 of 31 (48.4%) for 111 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 interception (43.9 QB Rating). He also has carried the ball 4 times for 18 yards (4.5 ypc).

Ingle Martin will be a clipboard holder for the Packers. He only has played in 1 game for the Packers and he knelt on the football 2 times for a loss of 5 yards. Still, Martin was a good QB at Furman in college and he will likely move up to the #2 spot when Brett Favre decides to hang up his cleats.

7. (243) Clark Harris, TE

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Friday 15 June 2007 at 11:10 am

The Packers decided to take a chance on Harris in the 7th round which is right about where most of the experts expected him to come off of the board.  He’s a big guy at 6’5″, 257 pounds but he’s soft for his size and doesn’t seem to interested in run blocking despite his size.  He has been a good receiver in college but he’s slow (4.9 40) and it’s questionable how often he will be able to get open.  At Rutgers, Harris played in 48 games (36 starts) and he caught 143 passes for 2,015 yards (14.1 avg) with 11 TD grabs.  Harris also is a good long snapper which could be the real reason why the Packers drafted him.

7. (228) DeShawn Wynn, RB

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Friday 15 June 2007 at 11:04 am

DeShawn Wynn certainly looks the part as he’s 5’10″, 234 pounds but he’s not the fastest running back around as he runs a 4.6 40.  Wynn has never been the main man in Florida’s running attack but he was a solid football player there.  Still, Coach McCarthy will have to keep on Wynn’s back to motivate him to play up to his ability.  In 46 games (16 starts) at Florida, Wynn carried the ball 446 times for 2,077 yards (4.7 ypc) with 25 TD runs.  He also caught 35 passes for 376 yards (10.7 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  He could surprise some because he has ability and he proved it in the tough SEC Conference.

6. (193) Mason Crosby, K

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Friday 15 June 2007 at 10:55 am

The Packers got a big steal with this pick as many experts had him going in the 2nd or 3rd round.  Crosby has a big leg and it has nothing to do with the air in Colorado as he had 50+ yard range on the road.  Crosby also booms kickoffs as he likes to put them between the goalposts.  In 48 games at Colorado, Crosby made 66 of 88 (75%) of his field goals including a long of 60 yards.  He also hit 109 of 117 extra points.  Packers fans will love this guy and he was an excellent pick by the Packers.

6. (192) Desmond Bishop, MLB

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Friday 15 June 2007 at 10:46 am

The Packers might have got themselves a player here, at least on running downs.  Bishop is 6’1″, 240 pounds but he’s a tad slow as he runs a 4.9 40.  He can make plays between the tackles and he’s a sure tackler, but he doesn’t have the speed to contend with outside runs or defend a tight end or running back on a passing play.  Bishop played in 25 games (all starts) for California, and he made 215 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, had 3 sacks, broke up 3 passes and had 3 interceptions.

6. (191) Korey Hall, MLB

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Friday 15 June 2007 at 10:35 am

Korey Hall was a playmaker at Boise State in college, but this will be a big jump for him.  He’s not especially fast and he’s a little on the small side (6’1″, 228 pounds) to handle the middle of an NFL defense.  He will likely be nothing more than a backup linebacker and a special teams player.  He could excel on special teams.  He played in 52 games at Boise State and he made 394 tackles, had 11.5 sacks, recovered 4 fumbles and he intercepted 11 passes (193 return yards, TD).

5. (157) David Clowney, WR

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Friday 15 June 2007 at 10:10 am

Many experts projected Clowney to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round so the Packers were happy to select him in the 5th round.  He is 6’0″, 184 pounds and he runs pretty fast as he can run a 4.45 40.  Clowney was held back at Virginia Tech due to sub par QB play but that won’t be a problem in Green Bay.  In 49 games (17 starts) at Virginia Tech, Clowney caught 93 passes for 1,373 yards (14.8 avg) with 6 TD receptions.  Clowney has also returned a few kicks in college so he could help out on special teams.

4. (119) Allen Barbre, OT

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Wednesday 13 June 2007 at 6:07 pm

Allen Barbre is a nasty player that likes to take the fight to the opposition.  He stands at 6’4″, 304 pounds and he’s a mean guy.  He might need to add a few more pounds if he’s to play right tackle in the pros.  It might also take him a little bit of time to adjust to the pro game because it’s a large leap in competition from what he played against in college.  Barbre played in 39 games (35 starts) at Missouri Southern.

The Green Bay Packers release OT Kevin Barry

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by dawgpounded on Sunday 10 June 2007 at 2:18 pm

The Packers felt that Kevin Barry wasn’t worth his cap number so they decided to cut him loose.  He’s didn’t play a down last season for the Packers.  In his 5 year career, Barry appeared in 59 games but he only started 8 of them.  Losing Barry won’t hurt the Packers one bit.

3. (89) Aaron Rouse, S

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by dawgpounded on Thursday 7 June 2007 at 12:17 am

Aaron Rouse is an imposing player on the football field as he’s 6’3″, 218 pounds and he runs a 4.47 40!  He’s inconsistent on the football field as he appears soft at times and dominant at other times.  He is truly a boom or bust pick because if the Packers toughen him up he could be a Pro Bowler in the future but if he plays soft the Packers could have a bust.  In 52 games (24 starts) at Virginia Tech, Rouse had 217 tackles, broke up 12 passes, had 5 interceptions (80 return yards), forced 4 fumbles and recovered a fumble.  Look for Rouse to be a good special teams player for the Packers next season.  I think Rouse will turn into a good player for the Packers.
