Green Bay Packers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Sunday 28 September 2008 at 9:52 am

The Packers would love to make the Bucs get involved with a shootout with them.  The Packers will likely come out throwing the ball against a Bucs’ defense that is allowing 237.7 yards passing per game.  The Packers want to jump out to a lead to protect their run defense which has been porous this season.  Aaron Rodgers has been great this season and the Bucs better get a good pass rush on him or he will pick apart their secondary with WRs Donald Driver and Greg Jennings.  RBs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson should also find some running room against the Bucs’ defense that is allowing 121.3 yards rushing per game and 4.0 ypc.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be smart to shift gears on offense this week and run the football.  The Bucs can’t win this game if Brian Griese has to outplay Aaron Rodgers throwing the ball.  The Packers are allowing 151.0 yards rushing per game this season and 5.7 yards per carry.  With that in mind the Bucs should just feed the rock to Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn all day long.  When the Bucs do throw the football they will likely keep it short to Ike Hilliard, Antonio Bryant and the TEs as the Packers already have 9 sacks this season.

PREDICTION:  GREEN BAY PACKERS 21, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS 20

The Green Bay Packers lose CB Al Harris

Blogged under Big Packer News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by admin on Saturday 27 September 2008 at 7:33 pm

The Packers have lost CB Al Harris for at least 3-4 weeks after he suffered a ruptured spleen last week against the Cowboys.  He has made 7 tackles and has defensed 5 passes this season.  Harris will be hard to replace as he is a lockdown CB but Tramon Williams will get the first chance.  Williams has made 8 tackles and defensed 1 pass this season.  The Packers will miss Harris big time starting this week against the Buccaneers.

Dallas Cowboys 27, Green Bay Packers 16

The Packers just couldn’t keep up with the offense of the Cowboys on Sunday Night.  Aaron Rodgers had another decent game for the Packers as he completed 22 of 39 passes for 290 yards.  He also carried the ball 5 times for 10 yards (2.0 ypc) with a TD run.  Ryan Grant had a so-so effort rushing for 54 yards on 13 carries (4.2 ypc).  Greg Jennings was tough for the Cowboys to deal with as he caught 8 passes for 115 yards (14.4 avg).  Donald Driver pitched in with 4 grabs for 76 yards (19.0 avg) in this game.  The Packers finished up with 84 yards rushing on 21 carries (4.0 ypc) and they also completed 22 of 39 passes for 250 yards.

Safety Aaron Rouse led the way for the Packers on defense with 12 tackles.  Fellow safety Nick Collins pitched in with 6 tackles and 1 interception.  The Cowboys finished up with 217 yards rushing on 35 carries (6.2 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 31 passes for 236 yards.  The Packers fell to 2-1 on the season with this loss.

Green Bay Packers vs. Dallas Cowboys

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Sunday 21 September 2008 at 10:48 am

The Cowboys will attempt to win there first game ever tonight at Lambeau Field (0-5) but the Packers are rolling right now.  This should be a great football game filled with offensive fireworks.  The Cowboys will likely come out running the football with Marion Barber (143 yards rushing) and rookie Felix Jones (72 yards rushing) against a Packers’ defense that is allowing 118.0 yards rushing and 5.2 yards per carry this season.  But, don’t expect the Cowboys to forget about throwing the football as Tony Romo (113.1 QB Rating) has not even been sacked once this season.  If he gets time to throw the ball Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton and Jason Witten could have big games.  But the Packers do have 6 sacks and 4 interceptions this season so Romo will have to be careful with the football.

The Packers’ gameplan should involve more running than usual as the Cowboys are giving up 4.1 yards per carry.  With that in mind look for Ryan Grant (112 yards rushing) and Brandon Jackson (73 yards rushing) to get a lot of work in this game.  The Packers have done a great job of protecting Aaron Rodgers in the pocket as he has only been sacked one time this season.  That won’t stop the Cowboys from blitzing as they already have 5 sacks this season.  If Rodgers (117.8 QB Rating) has time to throw the football tonight he should have a great game throwing to Donald Driver and Greg Jennings.

PREDICTION:  GREEN BAY PACKERS 37, DALLAS COWBOYS 34

Green Bay Packers 48, Detroit Lions 25

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by admin on Sunday 14 September 2008 at 5:25 pm

The Packers dominated this game in the first and fourth quarters running away with an easy victory over the hapless Lions.  Aaron Rodgers was outstanding once again completing 24 of 38 passes for 328 yards with 3 TD passes and 0 interceptions.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 25 yards (6.3 ypc) against the Lions.  Ryan Grant had a rough time with 20 yards rushing on 15 carries (1.3 ypc) in this game.  Brandon Jackson was very effective for the Packers in this game rushing for 61 yards on 7 carries (8.7 ypc) with a TD run.  WR Greg Jennings led the way in the passing game for the Packers today with 6 grabs for 167 yards (27.8 avg).  Donald Driver was also busy with 7 grabs for 52 yards (7.4 avg) with 1 TD grab.  WRs James Jones and rookie Jordy Nelson each also pitched in with a TD catch.  The Packers finished up with 123 yards rushing on 30 carries (4.1 ypc) and they also completed 24 of 38 passes for 324 yards.  The Packers dominated the football possessing it for 35:28 in this game.

The Packers’ Defense made a lot of big plays, especially at the end of the game to seal the Lions’ fate.  Linebacker A.J. Hawk led the way for the Packers’ Defense with 7 tackles and 2 sacks.  CB Charles Woodson had a outstanding game with 2 tackles and 2 interceptions (one was returned 41-yards for a TD).  Safety Nick Collins also had a solid game with 2 tackles and he also returned a interception for a TD (42-yarder).  The Lions finished up with 49 yards rushing on 12 carries (4.1 ypc) and they also completed 23 of 45 passes for 262 yards.  This impressive win has improved the Packers to 2-0 on the season.

Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Saturday 13 September 2008 at 1:55 pm

The Green Bay Packers swept the Lions last season outscoring them 71-39 but that was with Brett Favre calling the plays.  The Packers will likely come off of the bus trying to run the football against a Lions’ Defense that allowed 318 yards rushing (7.6 ypc) last week against the Falcons.  Ryan Grant rushed for 92 yards on 12 carries (7.7 ypc) last week against a tough Vikings’ defense so he will likely have little trouble running against the Lions.  Look for Brandon Jackson to also get some work in this football game as Grant will get tired at some point from running all 0ver the Lions.  Look for Aaron Rodgers, who had an outstanding first career start last week, to throw deep off of play action passing to WRs Greg Jennings and Donald Driver.  The Packers should have little trouble moving the ball against the Lions tomorrow.

The Lions should be able to run the football some against the Packers who allowed 187 yards and 5.7 yards per carry against the Vikings last week.  But, the Lions don’t have the same kind of personnel that the Vikings have so Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson likely won’t have near the success running the ball that Minnesota did.  Still, it would be foolish for the Lions not to throw the ball as Jon Kitna has quality targets in Calvin Johnson, Roy Williams, Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald.

PREDICTION:  GREEN BAY PACKERS 27, DETROIT LIONS 24

Green Bay Packers 24, Minnesota Vikings 19

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by admin on Tuesday 9 September 2008 at 11:43 pm

The Vikings gave the Packers a good fight last night but in the end it was Aaron Rodgers’ night.  Rodgers completed 18 of 22 passes for 178 yards with a 1-yard TD pass to fullback Korey Hall.  Rodgers also carried the ball 8 times for 35 yards (4.4 ypc) with a TD run which included a Lambeau Leap.  Ryan Grant only carried the football 12 times but he still compiled 92 yards (7.7 ypc) rushing.  Greg Jennings was the leading receiver in this game for the Packers with 91 yards on 5 catches (18.2 avg).  The Packers finished up with 139 yards rushing on 27 carries (5.1 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 22 passes for 178 yards.

A.J. Hawk (10 tackles) and Nick Barnett (8 tackles) led a subpar effort by the Packers’ defense on Monday Night.  After all, the Vikings did rush for 187 yards on 33 carries (5.7 ypc).  The Vikings also completed 16 of 35 passes for 168 yards.  The Packers did have a huge play on special teams in this game as CB Will Blackmon returned a punt 76 yards for a TD.  This was a nice win for the Packers as the Aaron Rodgers’ era has officially begun in Green Bay.

Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Saturday 6 September 2008 at 11:29 pm

The Minnesota Vikings improved in the off season while the Packers said goodbye to Green Bay legend Brett Favre.  The Vikings will do what they always do by running the football early and often against the Packers.  Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor will be in a battle for yards with linebackers Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk and Barry Poppinga.  The Packers have a really good pass defense so QB Tarvaris Jackson will have to be careful with the football.  The Vikings would love to get the ball deep to new toy Bernard Berrian but they will need to keep DEs Aaron Kampman, Cullen Jenkins and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamilia away from Jackson and that will be easier said than done.

The Packers’ offense will likely still be a potent unit as long as Aaron Rodgers stays healthy.  The Vikings have the best run defense in the NFL with DTs Pat Williams, Kevin Williams and inside linebacker E.J. Henderson.  RBs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson will likely have a tough time getting yards on Monday Night.  But, if the Packers can keep DE Jared Allen away from Aaron Rodgers he could have a field day.  WR Greg Jennings is the best deep threat on the Packers and he will be dealing with CBs Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin all game long.  Donald Driver and tight end Donald Lee will likely be attacking rookie free safety Tyrell Johnson and that could lead to some bad news for the Vikings on Monday Night.

PREDICTION:  GREEN BAY PACKERS 27, MINNESOTA VIKINGS 17

The Green Bay Packers release linebacker Abdul Hodge

Blogged under Big Packer News,Bloglockers,Front Page by admin on Friday 5 September 2008 at 7:45 pm

The Packers have released linebacker Abdul Hodge despite his strong showing in the preseason.  Hodge played in all 4 preseason games for the Packers and he made 15 tackles and defensed 1 pass.  Still, the Packers were not happy with how Hodge played as a rookie last season.  He played in 8 games (1 start) for the Packers last year and he made 10 tackles and defensed 2 passes.  The Packers shouldn’t miss Hodge too much as he had trouble staying healthy.

The Green Bay Packers sign punter Derrick Frost

Blogged under Big Packer News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by admin on Friday 5 September 2008 at 7:42 pm

The Packers have signed 27-year old Derrick Frost to punt this season and his arrival caused the Packers to release Jon Ryan.  Frost played in all 16 games for the Redskins last year and he punted the ball 75 times for 3,072 yards (41.0 avg) with a net average 0f 36.4 yards.  23 of Frost’s 75 punts were downed inside the opposing 20-yard line (30.7%) and he only had 7 touchbacks (9.3%) which are both outstanding percentages.  Frost has now played in 62 games in his NFL career and he has punted the ball 317 times for 13,021 yards (41.1 avg) with a net average of 36.4 yards per punt.  He has placed the ball inside the opposing 20-yard line 97 times (30.6%) in his NFL career and he only has 24 touchbacks (7.6%).

Jon Ryan punted two years for the Packers.  He punted in 32 games in that time with 144 punts for 6,403 yards (44.5 avg) with a net average of 37.0 yards per punt.  Ryan has nailed 35 punts inside the opposing 20-yard line (24.3%) and he had 23 touchbacks (16%).

This move was made because Derrick Frost positions the football better than Ryan and this move should help the Packers’ special teams.
