The Green Bay Packers have a lot of options at WR

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Steppin Up by admin on Wednesday 26 October 2011 at 8:03 pm

No one has the kind of quality depth at WR that the Packers do.  Greg Jennings is Aaron Rodgers’ favorite target in the passing game, but he keeps all of his WRs involved in the offense.  Jennings has caught 42 passes for 677 yards (16.1 avg) with 5 TD grabs so far this year.  Jordy Nelson is also stepping up big time for the Packers this year.  He has caught 24 passes for 465 yards (19.4 avg) with 4 TD grabs so far this year.  James Jones started this year slowly, but he has picked up the pace after Donald Driver got dinged up.  Jones has caught 19 passes for 326 yards (17.2 avg) with 3 TD grabs so far this year.  Rookie Randall Cobb has been solid when called upon this year for the Packers.  He has caught 11 passes for 187 yards (17.0 avg) with 1 TD grab so far this year for the Packers.  Look for Cobb to have a much bigger role down the road for the Packers.  Veteran Donald Driver has been dinged up most of this year.  He has caught 13 passes for 107 yards (8.2 avg) with 2 TD grabs so far this year.  The Packers are loaded at WR.

The Green Bay Packers lose rookie RB Alex Green for the season

Blogged under Big Packer News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injury Reports,The Draft Report by admin on Tuesday 25 October 2011 at 11:43 pm

23-year old RB Alex Green was a third round pick out of Hawaii last April.  He lasted 4 games for the Packers in which he carried the ball 3 times for 11 yards (3.7 ypc).  He also caught 1 pass for six yards for the Packers this year.  Green is set to undergo season ending surgery on his left knee soon.  This is a bad break for Green, but the Packers should be o.k. without him for now.

Green Bay Packers 33, Minnesota Vikings 27

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General by admin on Monday 24 October 2011 at 4:49 pm

The Green Bay Packers held off a very pesky Vikings’ squad yesterday in Minnesota.  Aaron Rodgers was razor sharp as usual as he completed 24 of 30 passes for 335 yards with 3 TD passes and 0 INTs.  James Starks also had a solid game with 75 yards rushing on 13 carries (5.8 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 24 yards (8.0 avg).  Ryan Grant pitched in with 29 yards rushing on 9 carries (3.2 ypc).  WR Greg Jennings led the way in the passing game yesterday with 7 grabs for 147 yards (21.0 avg) with 1 TD grab.  WR James Jones (4 rec, 63 yards), WR Jordy Nelson (4 rec, 52 yards), TE Jermichael Finley (2 rec, 13 yards, TD) and FB John Kuhn (1 rec, 2 yards, TD) also pitched in for the Packers in the passing game yesterday.  The Packers finished up with 114 yards rushing on 26 carries (4.4 ypc) and they also completed 24 of 30 passes (80%) for 307 yards as they had possession of the ball for 32:06.

The defense had big time issues with the Vikings’ offense yesterday.  LB Desmond Bishop (8 tackles), safety Charlie Peprah (7 tackles) and OLB Clay Matthews (6 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed and 1 QB hit) led the way for the Packers’ D in this game.  CB Charles Woodson was also outstanding with 4 tackles, 3 passes defensed and 2 interceptions.  The Vikings finished up with 218 yards rushing on 31 carries (7.0 ypc) and they also completed 13 of 32 passes (40.6%) for 217 yards.  The Packers are now 7-0 on the season.

Green Bay Packers (6-0) vs. Minnesota Vikings (1-5)

The Packers are rolling right now, while the Vikings are looking like a team trying to wave the white flag.  The Vikings are turning to rookie Christian Ponder at QB tomorrow in his starting debut, and it couldn’t come against a much tougher team.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Packers have the ball:  The Vikings are going to be without both of their starting corners in this game, so Aaron Rodgers is likely going to light them up.  That is as long as the O-Line keeps DE Jared Allen (9.5 sacks) away from Rodgers.  The Packers are likely going to spread the field and let Rodgers throw to whoever he wants to based on the matchups.  The fact that he doesn’t have a favorite receiver makes him really hard to stop.  If the Packers get a good lead in this game, look for them to grind the win out on the ground with James Starks and Ryan Grant.

When the Vikings have the ball:  The Vikings are going to run the ball to protect both Christian Ponder and their defense.  So the Packers are going to have to key on stopping Adrian Peterson.  That will be easier said than done as the Vikings are averaging 142.2 yards rushing per game and 5.1 yards per carry so far this year.  The Packers are going to be blitzing Ponder like crazy and trying to force him into making some mistakes with the ball.  WR Percy Harvin is likely the only other player, other than Peterson, that concerns the Packers’ D a tad.

The Green Bay Packers need a little more production out of the running game

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Steppin Up by admin on Saturday 22 October 2011 at 12:46 am

It’s hard to find much wrong with the Green Bay Packers’ offense.  After all, they are averaging 423.7 yards and 32.8 points per game so far this year.  But, the Packers have not run the ball too well so far this year.  They are averaging only 98.5 yards rushing per game and 3.8 yards per carry so far this year, and they need to do better.  James Starks and Ryan Grant have been sharing the ball so far this year for the Packers.  Starks has played in all six games for the Packers so far this year and he has carried the ball 70 times for 299 yards (4.3 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He has also caught 15 passes for 113 yards (7.5 avg) so far this year.  He is the Packers’ future at RB.  Ryan Grant still has a little bit left in the gas tank though.  He has played in 5 games for the Packers so far this year and he has carried the ball 48 times for 200 yards (4.2 ypc).  Grant has also caught 7 passes for 52 yards (7.4 avg) so far this year.  At some point the Packers are going to need to run the ball a little bit more in 2011.

Green Bay Packers 24, St. Louis Rams 3

The Packers were up 24-3 at the half  yesterday before  essentially calling off the dogs and running the rest of the clock out.  Aaron Rodgers was sharp as usual as he completed 17 of 28 passes for 310 yards with 3 TD passes and 1 INT.  He also carried the ball 7 times for 15 yards (2.1 ypc) in this game.  James Starks led the way on the ground for the Packers in this game with 49 yards rushing on 13 carries (3.8 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 17 yards (8.5 avg).  Ryan Grant pitched in with 25 yards rushing on 9 carries (2.8 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 27 yards (13.5).  WRs Jordy Nelson (2 rec, 104 yards with a TD (93 yards)) and Greg Jennings (6 rec, 82 yards) led the way in the passing game for the Packers today.  WRs James Jones (1 rec, 35 yards, TD) and Donald Driver (3 rec, 25 yards, TD) also pitched in for the Packers in the passing game.  The Packers finished up with 96 yards rushing on 32 carries (3.0 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 28 passes (60.7%) for 303 yards as they had possession of the ball for 29:19.

The defense gave up a lot of yards yesterday, but only 3 points.  LB Desmond Bishop led the way for the Packers in this game with 14 tackles.  LB A.J. Hawk (9 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 sack and 1 QB hit), safety Morgan Burnett (9 tackles) and safety Charlie Peprah (9 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss) also had solid games for the Packers yesterday.  CB Sam Shields pitched in with 5 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception.  The Rams finished up with 125 yards rushing on 25 carries (5.0 ypc) and they also completed 28 of 44 passes (63.6%) for 299 yards.  The Packers are now 6-0 on the year.

Green Bay Packers (5-0) vs. St. Louis Rams (0-4)

The Packers are rolling along and they are getting better, especially on defense.  The Packers have won both of their home games by a combined score of 91-57.  The Rams are coming off their bye week, but that isn’t going to change the fact that they suck.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game:

When the Packers have the ball:  The Packers are going to likely throw to get the lead in this game and then grind it out on the ground.  Aaron Rodgers should have a field day against a Rams’ D that is allowing 224.8 yards passing per game so far this year.  The Rams don’t have much depth at corner, so look for Rodgers to attack them down the field outstanding group of WRs.  TE Jermichael Finley is also likely to have a solid game this Sunday.  James Starks & Ryan Grant are taking aim at a Rams’ D that is allowing 179.8 yards rushing per game and 5.3 yards per carry this Sunday.

When the Rams have the ball:  Sam Bradford has been sacked 19 times already this season, so look for the Packers to send a lot of blitzes his way this Sunday.  WR Danario Alexander is averaging 24.5 yards per catch so far this year, so the secondary needs to pay special attention to him.  I have a feeling though that the Rams are going to feed the ball to Steven Jackson in an effort to control the ball and the clock.  So the front seven of the Packers better be ready for a challenge this Sunday.

Aaron Rodgers is playing out of this world for the Green Bay Packers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Steppin Up by admin on Tuesday 11 October 2011 at 8:29 pm

27-year old QB Aaron Rodgers just keeps getting better for the Packers and that has to be scary for the rest of the NFL.  Rodgers has played in all five games for the Packers so far this year and he has completed 129 of 180 passes (71.7%) for 1,721 yards with 14 TD passes and 2 INTs (122.9 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 20 times for 52 yards (2.6 ypc) so far this year.  To me, Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL right now and I would take him over even Tom Brady.

The Green Bay Packers will be without LT Chad Clifton

Blogged under Big Packer News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injury Reports,Needs to Step Up by admin on Tuesday 11 October 2011 at 8:25 pm

The Green Bay Packers are going to be without 35-year old starting left tackle Chad Clifton for a while due to a hamstring injury.  He has started all five games for the Packers so far this year.  23-year old Michael Newhouse replaced him at LT against the Falcons and they scored in five of the seven series he played in.  Newhouse has played in 5 games (2 starts) so far this year for the Packers.  The Packers are going to miss Clifton, but they are hoping that Newhouse will be able to step up and lessen the blow.

The Packers were down 14-6 at the half.  They then made adjustments on both sides of the ball and dominated the second half to surge to a very nice road win last night.  Aaron Rodgers completed 26 of 39 passes for 396 yards with 2 TD passes and 0 INTs.  He spread the ball around to 12 different receivers last night!  James Starks led the way on the ground in this game with 40 yards rushing on 12 carries (3.3 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 19 yards (9.5 avg).  Ryan Grant only rushed for 18 yards on 7 carries (2.6 ypc) and he caught 1 pass for six years.  Grant also lost a fumble.  The Packers got WR James Jones out of mothballs and he caught 5 passes for 140 yards (28.0 avg) with 1 TD grab in this game.  WR Greg Jennings (4 rec, 82 yards, TD) and TE Jermichael Finley (4 rec, 67 yards) also pitched in for the Packers in the passing game yesterday.  The Packers finished up with 57 yards rushing on 20 carries (2.9 ypc) and they also completed 26 of 39 passes (66.7%) for 369 yards as they had possession of the ball for 33:11.

The defense was excellent for the Packers last night.  Safety Charlie Peprah (8 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception) and LB Desmond Bishop (7 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for a loss and 1 QB hit) led the way for the Packers’ D in this game.  CB Jarrett Bush intercepted a pass that he returned 35 yards.  The Falcons finished up with 95 yards rushing on 22 carries (4.3 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 32 passes 56.3%) for 156 yards.  The Packers are now 5-0 so far this year.
