The Green Bay Packers are very, very happy with Aaron Rodgers

26-year old Aaron Rodgers must have learned a lot from learning under Brett Favre.  The most important thing he learned from Favre is to play with pain as he was getting beat up bad early last season but he kept getting up.  Rodgers played in all 16 games for the Packers last season and he completed 350 of 541 passes (64.7%) for 4,434 yards with 30 TD passes and 7 INTs (103.2 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 58 times for 316 yards (5.4 ypc) with 5 TD runs last season.  Rodgers has now played in 39 games in his career with the Packers and he has completed 726 of 1,136 passes (63.9%) for 8,801 yards with 59 TD passes and 21 INTs (97.2 QB Rating).  Rodgers also has carried the ball 125 times for 570 yards (4.6 ypc) with 9 TD runs in his career.  The Packers have a 17-15 (53.1%) record in the regular season with Rodgers under center but I think that’s going to continue to improve.  Rodgers has everything you want in a franchise QB and he is a more than fitting successor to Brett Favre.

24-year old Matt Flynn will be the #2 QB for the Packers who better keep praying every week for Rodgers’ health.  Flynn played in 15 games for the Packers last season and he completed 7 of 12 passes (58.3%) for 58 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 INT (36.1 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 5 times for -5 yards (-1.0 ypc) last season.  Flynn has now played in 22 games for the Packers and he has completed 9 of 17 passes (52.9%) for 64 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 INT (37.4 QB Rating).  Flynn has also carried the ball 9 times for -1 yard (-0.1 ypc) in his career but in his defense most of those were kneel downs.

Undrafted rookies Graham Harrell, Noah Shepard and Chris Pizzotti will battle it out for the #3 QB job for the Packers this training camp.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE PACKERS QBs in 2010:  A

The Green Bay Packers select DE C.J. Wilson in the 7th round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, General by admin on Friday 7 May 2010 at 5:57 pm

The Packers have selected DE C.J. Wilson out of East Carolina with the 230th overall pick (7th round) of the NFL Draft.  Wilson is a big guy at 6′3″, 284 pounds and he runs a 4.86 40.  He has good ahtletic ability for a man his size.  He played in 14 games (all starts) at East Carolina last season and he finished up with 57 tackles, 10.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, he batted down 1 pass, forced 2 fumbles and he recovered 1 fumble.  Wilson played in 54 games (44 starts) in his time in college in which he had 160 tackles, 45.5 tackles for a loss, he had 27 sacks, batted down 2 passes, he forced 4 fumbles and he recovered 1 fumble.  This was a good pick for the Packers as Wilson was projected by most “draft experts” to be selected in the 4th or 5th round.

The Green Bay Packers pick RB James Starks in the 6th round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, General by admin on Friday 7 May 2010 at 5:51 pm

The Packers have picked RB James Starks out of Buffalo with the 193rd overall pick (6th round) of the NFL Draft.  Starks is a big guy at 6′2″, 218 pounds and he can run a 4.5 40.  He runs with a upright style like Eddie George and Eric Dickerson did which causes him to take a lot of big hits.  That led to him missing the whole 2009 season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder.  Starks played in 36 games in his career at Buffalo and he carried the ball 698 times for 3,140 yards (4.5 ypc) with 34 TD grabs.  He also caught 127 passes for 898 (7.1 avg) with 3 TD grabs at Buffalo.  Look for Starks to have his best chance of making the Packers as a third down back.

The Green Bay Packers pick OG/OT Marshall Newhouse in the 5th round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, General by admin on Friday 7 May 2010 at 5:44 pm

The Packers have picked OG/OT Marshall Newhouse with the 169th overall pick (5th round) of the NFL Draft.  He is a big guy at 6′3″, 326 pounds so he has the size needed to be a excellent inside drive blocker in the running game.  He’s a tad slow though so it’s hard to see him playing much at tackle unless he gets in better shape.  Newhouse played in 13 games (12 starts) at TCU last season and he has played in 52 games (38 starts) in his four years there.  With the Packers needing help on the O-Line, Newhouse was a solid pick in the fifth round as he could develop into a starter down the road.

The Green Bay Packers pick TE Andrew Quarless in the 5th round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, General by admin on Friday 7 May 2010 at 5:40 pm

The Packers have picked TE Andrew Quarless with the 154th overall pick (5th round) of the NFL Draft.  Quarless has the size 6′5″. 250 pounds and the speed 4.8 40 to do damage in both the running and passing game for the Packers.  He is a good run blocker and he has an excellent set of hands.  Quarless played in 13 games (all starts) at Penn State last season and he caught 41 passes for 536 yards (13.1 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  He played in 48 games (31 starts) in his four years at Penn State and he caught 87 passes for 1,146 yards (13.2 avg) with 8 TD grabs.  Quarless fell to the Packers in the fifth round due to red flags for his off the field issues.  If the Packers can get him to behave himself they might just have a steal in Quarless.
